The Nile Delta is rich with history and presents a totally different perspective than the areas south of Cairo. Here you find lush surroundings presenting history in a unique fashion. Educational and entertaining, this program brings together history and culture. Day 01: Travel to Alexandria, the city Alexander the great built and Cleopatra made famous. Stop enroute to visit Wadi Natrun and it's monastery. The salt found here was used in the mummification process to dry out the body. Arriving Alexandria, visit Greco-Roman sites including the Catacombs, the amphitheater, Pompey's Pillar. Transfer to your 5 star hotel, the Sheraton Montazah. Overnight Alexandria (B) Day 02: Continue your tour of Alexandria including time to enjoy the new Library and the brand new Alexandria National Museum. Overnight Alexandria (B) Day 03: Drive to Rosetta (where the famous stone was found that gave archeologists the clues needed to understand hieroglyphics). With its strategic location between the Mediterranean and the western arm of the Nile, Rosetta has been an extremely important military site since early times. The town was witness to many important events in ancient as well as modern times. It is typically tranquil and highly green town with vast gardens, orchards and date-palm plantations, in addition to a multitude of beautiful historical houses, inns and mosques adorned with exquisite decorative inscriptions and woodworks. Visit sites in the area, enjoy lunch at Abu Kir bay, return to Cairo in the evening and the comfort of the Sonesta Hotel. Overnight Cairo (B,L). Day 04: Depart Cairo in the morning traveling northeast to Tanis. Though no longer, Tanis was an important City in the pharaonic period. Many believe that this was the Biblical city from which the Exodus began, but most will also remember it as the location where Indiana Jones discovered the "Lost Ark" in the movie. Tanis is considered to be probably the most important archaeological site in Egypt's northern Delta, probably because it is one of the largest and certainly the most impressive of the sites. From Tanis travel to Tal Basta, home to the cult of Bastet (the cat goddess) where an open air museum is sure to be of interest. There is also a Biblical connection. "Here, Jesus caused a water spring to well up from the ground, and His presence caused the idols to crumble, as foretold by the prophets of old. Behold the Lord rides on a swift cloud, and will come into Egypt and the idols of Egypt will totter at His Presence and the heart of Egypt will melt in the midst of it." (Isaiah 19:1).
